Privacy Policy

This policy explains what the Discussed extension reads, where data is sent, and what is stored in your browser.

Discussed finds Hacker News, Reddit, and Lobsters discussions about the page you are viewing. It can also summarize those discussions when you request it.

Page URLs

Discussed reads and normalizes the current tab's URL to search for related discussions. The normalized URL may be sent directly from your browser to the Hacker News Algolia API, Reddit, and Lobsters.

A locally stored Bloom filter checks whether a match is likely before applicable network requests. The filter is downloaded from GitHub Releases and updated periodically.

Discussion data

Titles, scores, comment counts, and comments returned by discussion services are processed by the extension. Discussion results are cached in browser storage for the configured cache duration.

Page content and AI summaries

Only when you click Summarize, Discussed may read the current page's article text and comments on supported sites. This does not run automatically when a page loads.

Discussion comments and any extracted page text are sent directly from your browser to the LLM provider you configured. Your API key is stored in browser storage and is sent only to that provider, never to Discussed. Generated summaries are cached locally for seven days.

Data collection

Discussed has no backend server or user accounts and does not send personal data to Discussed. The extension contains no analytics, tracking, or telemetry. The third-party requests described above go directly from your browser to those services.

Local storage and control

Discussion cache duration is configurable. Summaries are retained for seven days, and settings and API keys remain until you remove them or uninstall the extension. You can disable discussion sources and use the domain filter to control where automatic searches run.

Removing the extension or clearing its storage removes locally stored settings and cached data.
